WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE
Inform yourselves
Energise friends & acquaintances
Visit/call/email MPs and other public officeholders; say you demand action
Join activists, or support them financially
Withdraw financial support from fossil fuels (and tell the companies why)
Congratulate leaders who are doing the right thing: e.g. state premiers or energy ministers of the ACT, SA, VIC.
IN YOUR DAILY LIFE AS A CONSUMER
Some ideas for reducing your carbon emissions:
-
Electricity
-
Switch to green power, or install solar panels (possibly with state rebate?), or put in a battery and go off-grid.
-
-
Transport
-
Reduce or cut out flying (use teleconferences), use public transport, lobby for car parks at stations, ride a bicycle, buy local. When feasible, buy an electric car.
-
-
Land use and agriculture
-
Start eating less meat and dairy – those sheep and cows put out a lot of methane!
-
You can also influence friends by talking about why you're doing these things.
AS AN ACTIVE CITIZEN
Send a clear message to your representatives.
-
In the lead-up to the federal election
-
Go to candidate forums and push for climate action and renewable energy; then vote for the candidate / party with the best climate / environment policy.
Generally
-
Join a local group, e.g. Warrandyte Climate Action Network, StopAdani Eltham. Or form your own! Make it fun, and neighbourly.
-
Save the contact details for your local MP, the PM, Minister for Energy, local council, and send short emails or make phone calls to demand action.
-
Questions are best. Dear X, what are you doing to secure 100% renewable energy for Australia / in our shire? No need for debate; just tell them what you want. If they answer with waffle, repeat the question.
-
-
Campaigning: visit 350.org and StopAdani websites – the Adani mine is the number 1 battlefront at the moment – and join in as you can, e.g. with petitions. The Australian Conservation Foundation, Environment Victoria and the Wilderness Society also campaign.
KEY GOALS
STOP ADANI & other coal/gas projects
GET TO 100% RENEWABLES, FAST
ZERO-CARBON ECONOMY BY 2040
-
Make sure your investments and super are not contributing to fossil fuels.
-
If you have shares in fossil fuels, change them.
-
Ask sticky questions at shareholder meetings! Market Forces might help, or ACCR (Australian Centre for Corporate Responsibility).
-
If you’re time-poor, give money to support the action of others - donate via painless monthly transfers or one-off larger sums. For example:
-
Sponsor ground-breaking work on solutions: Beyond Zero Emissions.
-
Support tireless advocacy & work with towns and cities: Climate Council.
-
Get behind young activists: Australian Youth Climate Coalition.
